Precendents-The Guggenheim Museum

Artist

Painter, photographer and filmmaker, George Gittoes is an eyewitness to the worlds contact zones. Visiting the battle and killing fields of Rwanda, Iraq, Bosnia, Afghanistan- Gittoes produces poignant, rare images of the aftermath of terror, shock and death on the edge of human experience.

Gittoes, described simultaneously as figurative painter, a modernist, a postmodernist, a social realist, a pop artist and an expressionist, travels the globe to find his subjects. In the last two decades he has visited all the world’s trouble spots, capturing the atrocities, the attacks on basic human rights, on film, with pencil and paper and in oil on canvas.

Gittoes acknowledges his journey is one into the heart of human darkness. He has become a witness. ‘I believe there is a role for contemporary art to challenge, rather than entertain. My work is confronting humanity with the darker side of itself.’

My Reflection
My reflection on this project is that my first design solution is not always the final one. I will need to develop more solutions and make it better.

My Idea
‘I believe there is a role for contemporary art to challenge, rather than entertain. My work is confronting humanity with the darker side of itself.’

I created my gallery ‘ visual journey to the war’, the paintings are going to put in the main exhibition which in the central area of the gallery with direct light on them ,emphasized the purpose of the artist-bright and dark sides of the war. Then a series of different smaller gallery spaces are using to show George Gittoes’ photographs and films, which revealing the truth & barbarity of the war.

Because of the site I chose is small, so I am trying to set the space fully functioned and make the customers feel comfortable, to reach that point ,I went through Bernard Tschumi’s work (New Acropolis Museum, Alfred Lerner Hall).I designed the space like a “ real journey” through the warzone with carefully organized. The small rooms are divided into projection room and photos room. The open space area is for his paintings, all the walls can be used to exhibit them. It is like a circular arrow that take the people to feel the spirit of George Gittoes’ artworks. It is pretty essential that you go from one to another gallery room.

The second level is a bigger space with opening roof, which is make a harmony and peaceful sense. I think it is important to do so because the comparison of the two levels in lighting and space can help the people feel the true meaning of the war. It is my understanding that open and lighting space can make people feel relax and easy.
