Artist

Painter, photographer and filmmaker, George Gittoes is an eyewitness to the worlds contact zones. Visiting the battle and killing fields of Rwanda, Iraq, Bosnia, Afghanistan- Gittoes produces poignant, rare images of the aftermath of terror, shock and death on the edge of human experience.

Gittoes, described simultaneously as figurative painter, a modernist, a postmodernist, a social realist, a pop artist and an expressionist, travels the globe to find his subjects. In the last two decades he has visited all the world’s trouble spots, capturing the atrocities, the attacks on basic human rights, on film, with pencil and paper and in oil on canvas.

Gittoes acknowledges his journey is one into the heart of human darkness. He has become a witness. ‘I believe there is a role for contemporary art to challenge, rather than entertain. My work is confronting humanity with the darker side of itself.’
